This week a new museum opened in Philadelphia. The National Museum of American Jewish History’s mission is to present educational programs and experiences that preserve, explore and celebrate the history of Jews in America to inspire in people of all backgrounds a greater appreciation for the diversity of the American Jewish experience and the freedoms to which Americans aspire.
The museum gives us lots to ponder about our many parts and how we come together to present ourselves. I loved the Only in America® Gallery/Hall of Fame with a top eighteen of distinguished Jewish Americans being featured in the Museum building.
The group behind the museum is Mikveh Israel translated "The Hope of Israel", a congregation founded in 1740 as the synthesis of the Spanish-Portuguese Jewish Community in Philadelphia. The congregation is also the origin of the Mikveh Israel Cemetery located at 8th & Spruce Streets as part of Independence National Historical Park.
Makes me proud to be a Jewish American!
