Walking in Spain

I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. John Muir

I love to walk. Yesterday I walked from my home on the South Side up to where my daughter lives in Squirrel Hill. It’s fun to map a walk and see how far you have actually travelled. Yesterday’s walk clocked in at 4.87 miles!

I learned about the importance of walking as physical exercise back in the early 90s when I went to what I always affectionately called “a health prison”.  They taught fitness walking as the way to lose weight by boosting metabolism, maintaining health by reducing the risk of heart disease and improving emotional well being. More than any of the reasons to walk, I find walking is the most useful means of sorting out whatever life issue is currently presenting itself to me.

Walking is the perfect pace to view the world. I’ve done some fabulous walking tours and it’s easy to incorporate walking into any daily routine. Over the years I’ve found the best way to keep walking is to have a destination and a purpose along with a scheduled time with a walking partner.

Walking works anywhere, anytime. All you need are good walking shoes and socks, to know the rules of the road and you’re onto one of life’s simple pleasures.

I feel the same way about biking. It's so much fun, not to mention relaxing, to set out on your bike and just end up where you end up. I've calculated leisurely bike rides that end up over 30 miles.
